PAYOLA | Born Out of Frustration

Payola – ‘Born Out of Frustration’ Review

Payola’s debut single, ‘Born Out of Frustration,’ immediately grabs attention with an Arctic Monkeys-inspired swaggering riff that encapsulates the band’s distinct blend of 90s indie and Britpop influences. Formed in January 2024 at The Argyll Arms pub off Oxford Street by Craig Edmonds, Dave Farley, and Scott Forsyth, Payola brings a refreshing yet nostalgic sound to the current music scene, channeling the energy of 60s rock ‘n’ roll, soul, 70s punk, and Britpop into something vibrant and new.

Written by lead guitarist Scott Forsyth, ‘Born Out of Frustration’ strikes a chord with listeners who feel the societal grind weighing them down. The track is a raw, spirited commentary on a society that often crushes the individual spirit to maintain the status quo, rather than lifting people up. The lyrics capture a sense of urgency and discontent that resonates with today’s listeners, and the music matches this intensity with its driving rhythm and gritty guitar work. Forsyth describes the song as “a fast angry tune with a catchy riff and chorus. I’m hoping this will resonate with people who are feeling the same and make them want to play it loud.”

The song’s swagger is underscored by a confident, almost hypnotic riff that recalls the best of Britpop while incorporating a modern edge. There are echoes of Reverend & The Makers’ socially charged storytelling and Republica’s bold, punchy delivery, but Payola manage to carve out their own identity. The band’s sound feels both familiar and fresh, blending sharp wit with undeniable musicality.

In a debut that doesn’t disappoint, Payola delivers an anthem for the frustrated, a rallying cry wrapped in infectious hooks and charged with raw energy. Lead singer, Dave Farley, proclaims “it’s a statement of intent, it’s an announcement that we’re here. Debut singles should put people on notice. We ain’t here to #### about!”. ‘Born Out of Frustration’ suggests that Payola has both the attitude and the chops to make a significant mark on the modern rock scene. If this single is anything to go by, we can expect great things from these new indie provocateurs.
